Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Description

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an X-ray examination performed under general anaesthetic. It involves injecting a special dye, also called contrast medium, into the bile ducts using a catheter inserted into the duodenal papilla.

This procedure is mainly used to remove gallstones from the main bile duct and to place stents for drainage.

Biopsies can also be taken during this procedure depending on the patient’s requirements.
