Pelvic radiotherapy patient guidelines

Guidelines

To achieve the best results from your radiotherapy, we recommend that you observe the following guidelines throughout the course of your treatment::

  • It is important that you have an empty rectum (bowels) and a comfortably full bladder for each treatment session. We recommend that you drink between 300 to 500 ml of water about one hour before your appointment; you should feel the need to empty your bladder during your treatment session.
  • You do not need to change your normal diet. However, please try to limit your intake of gas-producing foods, such as cabbage, beans and fizzy drinks.
  • If you experience diarrhoea or discomfort when urinating, please speak to a member of our team.

Everyone is different and the side effects of radiotherapy vary from person to person. If you have any concerns or questions, please speak to your doctor.
