After studying medicine at the University of Zurich, he continued his training in general surgery at the Hôpital Riviera in Montreux. His training as a specialist in cardiac and thoracic vascular surgery took place at the Zurich University USZ, at the Triemli Hospital in Zurich and at the Geneva University Hospitals HUG.
A fellowship lasting three years at the Royal Brompton Hospital RBH in London, the largest center for complex cardiac surgery in the UK, allowed him to develop his surgical skills, particularly in the field of aortic surgery. Before joining Hôpital de la Tour, Dr. Syburra was an attending physician at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital LUKS. In the field of aviation, Dr. Syburra has trained as a military and civil aviation doctor. He is the military deputy to the chief medical officer of the Swiss Air Force within the Aeromedical Center in Dübendorf, with the rank of Major. He is also a private pilot. In the alpine sector, he holds the UIAA ICAR ISMM SSMM international diploma in mountain medicine and was a mountain doctor for the Patrouille des Glaciers from 2004 to 2018.
Dr. Syburra is also Chairman of the Aviation Task Force within the EACTS as well as Secretary-General of the Research Task Group HFM-316 “Expert panel for state of the art cardiovascular risk assessment in aircrew and other high risk occupations” within the NATO Science & Technology Organization.
