Endoscopic Revision of Gastric Bypass via Endosuture: A First in French-Speaking Switzerland

Révision endoscopique de bypass gastrique par endosuture : une première en Suisse romande

The gastroenterology department at Hôpital de La Tour has made a significant breakthrough in interventional endoscopy by performing the first case in French-speaking Switzerland of an endoscopic revision of a gastric bypass using endosuture with the Overstitch system. This innovative procedure was performed by Dr. En-Ling Leung Ki, a gastroenterologist at Hôpital de La Tour, with expert support from Dr. Patrick Aepli, chief of the gastroenterology department at Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, in close collaboration with the Boston Scientific team.

After gastric bypass surgery, the gastrojejunal anastomosis can widen over the years, leading to unwanted weight regain and/or dumping syndrome, characterized by the rapid emptying of food from the stomach into the small intestine. Endoscopic revision of this anastomosis using endosuture, also known as Trans-oral Outlet Reduction endoscopy (TORe), is a minimally invasive and safe approach to narrowing the anastomosis. This procedure aims to restore a restrictive anatomical condition, thereby reducing gastric emptying and increasing satiety.

TORe has proven particularly effective as part of a multidisciplinary approach to treating weight regain following gastric bypass surgery and/or dumping syndrome.

This initiative underscores Hôpital de La Tour’s commitment to medical innovation and the continuous improvement of patient care, in partnership with local and international experts. It also demonstrates the multidisciplinary collaboration between Hôpital de La Tour’s gastroenterology department and the La Tour Obesity Center, led by Prof. François Pralong.
