Comprising a multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art technical facilities, the HUG Breast Center provides personalized, multidisciplinary care for patients with breast cancer. It has been certified since 2014 by the Swiss Cancer League (LCC) and the Swiss Society of Senology (SSS).
Since 2016, a collaboration has been in place between Hôpital de La Tour and the HUG in the field of oncology. With this new partnership, the two institutions are expanding their collaboration to encompass the full spectrum of breast cancer care—including diagnosis, surgical, radiation, and medical treatments, breast reconstruction, and follow-up care.
Dr. Alexandre Bodmer, the physician in charge of the HUG Breast Center, emphasizes that “the LCC and SSS quality certification guarantees that care for people with breast cancer is provided in accordance with the best practices implemented at the HUG Breast Center.” In particular, the certification requires care to be provided by an interdisciplinary team of medical specialists, healthcare staff, and primary nurses who support each patient throughout their care journey.
This agreement also establishes a sharing of expertise between the teams at both institutions. Pre-treatment and postoperative multidisciplinary consultations—known as tumor boards—are thus held once a week via videoconference. These sessions allow for the presentation of patient cases and joint discussion of the best options for each patient. Tumor samples from Hôpital de La Tour are also analyzed by the HUG’s Clinical Pathology Department. In addition, a shared database ensures compliance with quality criteria such as treatment turnaround times.
Axelle Alibert, Director of Quality and Patient Experience at Hôpital de La Tour, emphasizes that “this collaboration guarantees patients access to highly specialized, high-quality care—from diagnosis to rehabilitation—on both sides of the canton, and more broadly benefits all individuals with breast cancer in Geneva.”
