Revision Rates for Hip and Knee Replacements: Among the Best in Switzerland

In Switzerland, more than 20,000 hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed each year in 150 hospitals. Data on these procedures are collected in the Swiss Implant Registry (SIRIS), and the revision rate is then tracked over the two years following the initial surgery.

This rate provides insight not only into the quality of the implanted products but also into the quality of the surgical procedures. Based on an analysis covering the period from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2020, with follow-up on revisions through December 31, 2022, at Hôpital de La Tour, the two-year revision rate for hip replacements is 1.5%, compared to a Swiss average of 2.5%, and 1.2% for knee replacements, compared to a national average of 3.4%.

These excellent results are due to the significant increase in the number of cases treated (up to 30% more between the two analysis periods) and the growing expertise of all our departments involved in our patients’ care pathways.

Of the 20 hip and knee prosthesis revisions during the study period:

  • Only 3 were due to infections; the others were performed due to fractures or dislocations unrelated to surgical techniques or the care provided.
  • Only 2 took place at other institutions. This demonstrates the trust our patients place in our teams.

These results confirm Hôpital de La Tour’s expertise in the field of orthopedic surgery, particularly thanks to the development of highly specialized care pathways that guarantee patients state-of-the-art care.
