The Quality Strategy of La Tour Hospital
Thanks to advances in science and medicine, life expectancy is increasing, mortality rates are declining, and many diseases have become chronic. In light of these changes, we must establish systems to monitor these long-term conditions in order to maintain—or even improve—the quality of life for those affected. These measures may include, for example, supportive care that promotes a better quality of life—such as adapted physical activity, proper nutrition, and pain management—or preventive measures that help avoid or delay the onset or consequences of a disease. We are currently witnessing a surge in these needs without any corresponding reevaluation of how the system operates; this is consequently leading to rising healthcare costs. At Hôpital de La Tour, we are convinced that high-quality medicine is both efficient and responsible.
Beyond medical expertise, our mission commits us to caring for each patient by safeguarding the quality of life that matters most to them, providing the same care we would want for ourselves or one of our loved ones. We are passionately committed, as a team, to ensuring that the people who entrust their health to us regain the quality of life they aspire to as soon as possible. Hôpital de La Tour draws its strength from teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients in the context of an increasingly specialized medical field.

Additional Quality Initiatives at Hôpital de La Tour
Hôpital de La Tour supports all national initiatives that provide patients with transparent information on the quality of hospital care. However, we believe it is necessary to go beyond these essential measures, as is the case in some countries where the measurement of patient-relevant medical outcomes extends far beyond fall or infection rates. Hôpital de La Tour is a member of the CIRRNET (Critical Incident Reporting & Reacting NETwork) network. CIRRNET is a group of experts that collects—anonymously—reports of errors and near misses at the national level, analyzes them, and shares best practices to prevent such errors from recurring.
- Measuring medical outcomes relevant to the patient
-
Measuring patient-reported health outcomes provides insight into patients’ perspectives on their health status and the effects of surgical procedures or treatments.
For certain conditions, patients beginning their care journey at Hôpital de La Tour are asked to complete specific, scientifically validated questionnaires. These questionnaires include questions designed to assess the impact of the patient’s condition on their quality of life, pain levels, ability to perform certain activities of daily living, and more.
These questionnaires, known as PROMs (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures), are completed before treatment begins and continue to be completed for several months or years after the end of the patient’s care journey at the hospital to ensure the best possible follow-up.
The data collected systematically in this way, combined with objective clinical data based on scientific evidence, helps tailor medical care to the patient’s needs, values, and preferences.
When aggregated and consolidated, this data makes it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments by combining them with comparable cost data, thereby determining the value of a treatment for a patient.
- Managing Adverse Events
-
In its management of adverse events, Hôpital de La Tour applies a principle that applies across all departments of the facility: acknowledging that incidents can occur within a hospital and that they must be reported to prevent them from happening again.
Knowing how to recognize, report, and analyze adverse events in a hospital is a major challenge, but one that is crucial to proposing improvements that benefit both patients and the hospital as a whole. Every new staff member is therefore trained in reporting adverse events to instill a culture of quality based on transparency and continuous improvement.
This approach enables the implementation of preventive and corrective actions to improve the quality of services and the safety of patient care, and brings about changes in the hospital’s risk management culture.
Quality Certifications at Hôpital de La Tour
In several specific areas, there are certifications designed to guarantee the quality of the services provided by Hôpital de La Tour. A certification is awarded by an independent organization and is intended to ensure compliance with quality criteria or standards.
For example, the intensive care unit at Hôpital de La Tour has been certified by the Swiss Society of Intensive Care Medicine since 1990. A certification committee verifies whether the staff, equipment, and organizational structure of the unit meet the latest requirements established by the field of critical care medicine. In addition to on-site audit visits, information is continuously collected in a database to ensure the safety and quality of patient care at all times.

Hôpital de La Tour’s Participation in Swiss Quality Registries
Registers help ensure and improve quality over the long term. Hospitals participating in a register are required to provide anonymized data on, for example, the tests and procedures performed. By comparing data from multiple institutions across Switzerland and tracking how that data changes over several years, the organization responsible can identify long-term trends.
For example: Hôpital de La Tour has participated in the SIRIS registry (Swiss Implant Registry) since 2012. Among other things, this registry records the type of prosthesis, its components, and the surgical technique used. This allows us to analyze, for example, whether certain prostheses need to be replaced sooner than others and to understand why, so that patients can benefit from the highest possible quality of care in the future.
