Did you know there’s a difference between being sedentary and being physically inactive?
The distinction between a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity may seem subtle, but it’s crucial to our well-being. Being sedentary refers to a lifestyle in which we spend long hours (>7 hours) sitting or lying down—whether at work, in the car, or in front of screens. In short, it refers to any waking state in which energy expenditure is close to that of rest. Physical inactivity, on the other hand, refers to an insufficient level of physical activity that does not meet the recommendations for health-promoting physical activity.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an adult should ideally engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity each week. This may seem like a challenge, but it’s important to understand that even a small increase in our daily physical activity can have beneficial effects on our overall health.
It is crucial to note that simply being physically active does not necessarily offset the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle. In other words, it is possible to be physically active yet sedentary—that is, to engage in physical activity several times a week while still spending several hours sitting. Reducing a sedentary lifestyle is therefore essential to fully reap the benefits of physical activity.
So, what can we do to combat a sedentary lifestyle and become more active in our daily lives?
Here are some simple and effective ideas:
- Choose active modes of transportation: Opt for biking, walking, or riding a scooter for your daily commutes.
- Incorporate physical activity at work: Take active breaks to stretch or walk, and take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible. These small changes can make a big difference in the long run.
- Enjoy active hobbies: DIY projects, gardening, or even housework are excellent ways to stay active while completing daily tasks. Find activities you enjoy that help you move more.
Every bit of movement counts in our quest for a more active and dynamic life. By incorporating these simple changes into our daily routines, we can gradually reduce our sedentary habits and improve our overall health.
