In early October, the radiology department at Hôpital de La Tour received certification for performing “image-guided, vacuum-assisted, minimally invasive breast biopsy”—known as Minimal Invasive Breast Biopsy (MIBB)—issued by the Swiss Society of Senology.
This certification is granted based on compliance with numerous criteria, such as the training of radiologists specializing in breast imaging and the specific training of radiology technicians. The number of procedures performed, collaboration with a reference center for pathology, and interdisciplinary collaboration (the HUG Tumor Board) are among the other criteria required for this certification. It thus contributes to a high standard of breast cancer care.
Macrobiopsy, performed under stereotactic guidance using a mammography machine, is a computer-assisted 3D radiological biopsy technique designed to precisely locate a lesion and then perform a biopsy. The procedure can also be performed under ultrasound guidance. This biopsy allows for the collection of a larger tissue sample than with a traditional microbiopsy. It is an outpatient procedure performed for diagnostic purposes, eliminating the need for a surgical excision under anesthesia. This technique reduces overall costs and is becoming indispensable in many situations.
