This week, the general internal medicine training program at Hôpital de La Tour received official accreditation as an “ISFM Training Center in General Internal Medicine (MIG), Category A.” In other words, this is the highest Swiss certification in the field of postgraduate medical training in general internal medicine. We are now the only private institution in the Lake Geneva region to hold this accreditation.
For the past two years, the general internal medicine training program has been led by Professor Omar Kherad. In total, a team of 18 chief physicians—from various hospital medical departments—offers a comprehensive postgraduate training program for future specialists in general internal medicine. The program covers the entire basic training curriculum, in accordance with the new ISFM guidelines, including 6 months of outpatient care and 3 months in the emergency department.
Training takes place through a rotation system that includes the general internal medicine department, the emergency department, the intensive care unit, the continuous care unit, the cardiopulmonary unit, and the gastrointestinal surgery department. This program includes 23 resident physicians and 5 senior residents in training to become future family physicians or hospital internists.
The general internal medicine training program at Hôpital de La Tour thus joins the General Internal Medicine Department (SMIG) of the Geneva University Hospitals. Together, they are the only two “Category A” training institutions in general internal medicine in the canton of Geneva.
This new recognition builds on the past 40 years of commitment to medical training at Hôpital de La Tour. As the largest private training center in French-speaking Switzerland, we welcome 52 residents and fellows each year across 11 training programs. Helping to ensure the next generation of physicians significantly promotes medical excellence and high-quality care, while ensuring a stronger presence for patients.
